Health Care

Canada's Express Entry system is one of the primary channels through which skilled workers get permanent residency. Among the classes of high-demand occupations, healthcare professionals are pegged at the top of the list as Canada continues to seek skilled labor in this sector. The Category-Based Selection for health occupations under Express Entry will be open to candidates with skills, experience, and qualifications that meet labor market needs for the Canada healthcare system.

Why Healthcare Professionals Are in Demand

The demand for health workers continues to rise in many fields across the country. A few reasons contributing to the increasing demand for health professionals in Canada include the following :

  • Aging Population : The number of seniors is growing, hence increasing the requirement for healthcare services.
  • Shortage of Health Care Workers : Most rural and remote areas have shortages in health professionals; thus, qualified professionals are in demand.
  • Expansion of Health Care Services : As more investments are being carried out by the Canadian government in healthcare infrastructure, there is an increasing need for health providers throughout the country.

Health professionals, such as doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and pharmacists, among others, are needed to ensure a further improvement in the quality of life for the citizens.

Who is Eligible?

The category-based selection for health professional occupations opens to applicants with past experience in various positions within the health care field. An applicant is only eligible if they meet the following qualifications:

  • Experience in a Healthcare Occupation : The applicant must have gained experience in one of the professions targeted in healthcare. These generally include doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, occupational therapists, and others.
  •  Qualifying for Express Entry : You must be eligible for one of three Express Entry programs: Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class.
  • Language Skills : You will have to satisfy the language proficiency in either English or French with a CLB level that is required for your occupation.
  • Educational Credentials Assessment : Depending on your regulated health occupation, you may be required to undergo evaluation of your educational credentials against Canadian standards.
  • Valid Job Offer (Optional) : While a job offer is not mandatory, having one from a Canadian healthcare employer can increase your chances of selection.

How Selection Works

The EE system uses a Comprehensive Ranking System, where candidates in the pool compete ranked against other candidates in the pool based on their age, level and field of education, amount of work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability. Category-based selection puts the candidate in this occupation front of the queue in categories selected by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration during periodic rounds of invitation.

  1. Create an Express Entry Profile : Enter the profile in the Express Entry pool, stating your occupation under the healthcare category.
  2. Get a CRS Score : Once entered into the pool, you will get a score through the Comprehensive Ranking System, based on your qualifications. Candidates in the healthcare sector often find themselves in the front line when the government extends invitations within certain categories.
  3. Receive an Invitation to Apply : If you meet the cut-off score for a healthcare-specific round of invitations, you'll receive the ITA for permanent residency.
  4. Application for Permanent Residency : On receipt of ITA, a complete application for permanent residency must be forwarded within a stipulated time, usually within 60 days.
  5. Application Processing : Normally, applications under Express Entry take 6 to 8 months to get processed.
